With the midterms about four weeks away, a story keeps circulating online: that the Trump administration is racing to have the President announce that humanity is not alone. We checked it against the record. The honest answer is that the disclosure effort is real, but the countdown is not. Here is what is documented, what is speculation, and what to watch before November 3.

What is on the record
The February directive
On February 19, 2026, President Trump directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other agencies to begin identifying and releasing files on “alien and extraterrestrial life,” UAP and UFOs. Asked about it, he told reporters he did not know if aliens are real, according to NPR.
Six releases and the teasing
Since May 8, the Department of War has published seven PURSUE tranches; the first six totaled 450 files, and Release 07 arrived on October 23, 2026. Read our full PURSUE recap. AP via PBS News reports that Trump has built suspense with “tantalizing updates,” saying “some of it’s going to be very interesting to people.”
The Pentagon waiver
In early October the Department of War said covered personnel can provide UAP information through PURSUE without nondisclosure penalties, according to USA Herald. It opens an official review channel. It does not authorize public leaks, and it proves nothing about extraterrestrial life by itself. See our report on the Pentagon waiver for UAP whistleblowers.
Congress
The House adopted Rep. Eric Burlison‘s UAP Disclosure Act as an amendment to the FY2027 NDAA on July 22. It would create a permanent UAP Records Collection and an independent review board. It still has to move through the rest of the legislative process. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna’s March demand for 46 whistleblower-identified videos went unanswered by her deadline, per AP via PBS News, though she says they are expected in a later release. See our Burlison SCIF interview.
The “race against the clock” claim: what we could and could not find
We searched major outlets and official sources. We found no reporting that the President, the White House or the Pentagon plans a declaration of non-human life before the election, and no official date for the next release. Trump has said he is unsure the subject is his own interest, and the stated purpose of the program is file release. The closest thing to a “not alone” line comes from a Fox News piece on how declassified footage affects public belief, not from the administration.
The only date-based speculation we found is a USA Herald article noting that every release has landed on a Friday and floating Friday the 13th for Release 07. That guess missed: Release 07 landed on Friday, October 23. We could not access Reddit or X, so we cannot assess claims there. Treat any specific announcement date as unverified.
The political reading
Critics have a different framing. The Washington Post reported the files as a potential distraction from the Iran war, the Epstein saga and economic headwinds before the midterms. Former AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick called the promises a “shiny object” and told AP he has seen the records and expects no bombshell. On the other side, Trump-aligned Republicans in Congress argue the Pentagon is still holding back material, and Vice President JD Vance says he is “obsessed” with the files.
Both readings can be true at once: the releases answer real demands for transparency, and they also keep the subject in the news. What neither reading supports is a confirmed plan for a “we are not alone” statement. The files released so far label every case “unresolved,” not extraterrestrial.
What to watch before November 3
Four signals matter more than rumors: an official Release 07 announcement from the Department of War, the long-promised whistleblower videos Rep. Luna requested, the first public activity from the new PURSUE personnel channel, and the fate of the Burlison amendment in the NDAA. We track the pace and odds on the live Disclosure Clock, explained on the UFO Disclosure Clock page.

UFO disclosure before the midterms: frequently asked questions
Will Trump announce that aliens are real before the midterms?
There is no credible reporting that he plans to. Trump has said he does not know whether aliens are real, and the administration’s stated goal is releasing government files, not making a declaration. The midterms are on November 3, 2026.
When is the next Pentagon UFO file release?
Release 07 was published on Friday, October 23, 2026, 35 days after Release 06. All seven releases so far landed on Fridays, and the gaps have grown from 14 days to 42 days, so any date for Release 08 you see online is a guess.
What is the Pentagon UFO waiver?
It lets current and former personnel give UAP information to the PURSUE channel without nondisclosure penalties. It feeds an official review process. It does not let anyone publish classified material or prove anything about extraterrestrial life.
What is the UAP Disclosure Act?
Rep. Eric Burlison’s amendment to the FY2027 NDAA, adopted by the House on July 22, 2026. It would create a permanent UAP Records Collection at the National Archives and an independent UAP Records Review Board. It still has to clear the full legislative process.
Are the UFO files a political distraction?
Critics say so. Coverage has described the files as a possible distraction from the Iran war, the Epstein saga and economic pressure. Supporters, including some Republicans in Congress, say the releases answer long-standing demands for transparency. The files themselves contain no confirmed evidence of non-human intelligence.
